Made in Ann Lui’s Architecture in the Open City studio, which projected Chicago’s Lake Street corridor to 2050, and entered in the 2024 Gui Competition, which asked for a food commons in the West Loop. Chicago Artists Coalition sits in West Town, between the gentrified Fulton Market District and East Garfield Park, a neighborhood at risk of gentrification. Tracing how artists have been displaced across Chicago since the 1950s, the project proposes that CAC stays and grows on its original site. Artist housing and studios, a library, an auditorium and an arcaded food hall that serves as the food commons join the existing buildings, linked by a grid of canopies, platforms and stairs that turns the block into shared ground for making, learning and living.more on the studio ↗
